Williamson Pink Star Sets Per-Carat Record at Sotheby's Hong Kong
An 11.15-carat oval fancy vivid pink diamond, the Williamson Pink Star, sold for HK$453.2 million (approximately US$57.7 million) at Sotheby's Hong Kong on 7 October 2022, setting a world record for the highest price per carat ever paid for a diamond at auction. It was cut from a 32.32-carat rough recovered at Tanzania's Williamson mine in 2018.
The sale underscored persistent demand among ultra-high-net-worth collectors in Asia for top-tier fancy colored diamonds, even amid broader macroeconomic uncertainty. Bidding was reportedly vigorous, with the result nearly doubling pre-sale estimates. The buyer's identity was not disclosed, though Sotheby's confirmed the stone passed into a private collection.
