The Estrela de Fura Sets a World Record for Any Ruby at Sotheby's
The Estrela de Fura, a 55.22-carat Mozambique ruby of vivid 'pigeon's blood' color cut from a 101-carat rough, sold for US$34.8 million at Sotheby's New York in June 2023 — a world auction record for any ruby and, at the time, for any colored gemstone. It achieved approximately US$630,000 per carat.
The result underscored the extraordinary strength of investment-grade colored gemstones at the top of the quality spectrum. Specialists noted that the Estrela de Fura benefited from a laboratory report confirming no heat treatment which, combined with its size, Fura Gems Mozambique provenance documentation, and the visual character of its color, placed it beyond meaningful comparison to any other ruby available in the market.
